Dan Deevy (he/him) is a 25+ year veteran producer, host, entertainment journalist & celebrity interviewer.
In 2016 he founded the nonprofit organization GAAAYS IN SPAAACE (GIS) to advocate for the inclusion of ALL underrepresented communities in both science fiction & the actual space industry.
Dan also recently addressed the UNITED NATIONS GENERAL ASSEMBLY on the need for universal equality as humanity takes its first steps into space.
Dan Deevy was born on Staten Island, NY into a blue-collar family consisting of cops, firemen, correctional officers and EMT's. He was the first member of his family to graduate from college and surprised everyone when he abandoned previous plans for Law School to pursue a career in the uncertain world of entertainment journalism.
After nearly 2 decades of successfully carving out his own unique space within the entertainment industry, he decided it was time for a change.
In 2015 he launched a massive grassroots social media campaign called, #WEWANTWORF to convince CBS that STAR TREK should return to the small screen with a series set in the Klingon Empire called, ‘STAR TREK TNG: THE WORF CHRONICLES’ created by and starring Michael Dorn.
The campaign’s message was successfully received by CBS on July 17, 2015 when Deevy delivered nearly 70,000 mini muffins sent in by fans all around the world to their offices with a note saying, ‘We Want Worf.’ Those muffins were later donated to a local LA food bank.
Deevy’s next project was unexpectedly born out of the 2016 release of ‘STAR TREK BEYOND.’ This film finally answered a question which has been posed for more than 50 years… “Does the LGBTQ+ Community still exist in Roddenberry’s Utopian vision of the future?” And the answer was YES!
This changed everything for gay Trekkies, especially Deevy. It proved once and for all that being gay wasn’t some disease that had been cured by the 23rd century… it showed the world that we survived and finally achieved our dream of full and complete equality.
It was an historic step forward for the franchise worth celebrating. So Deevy did. He organized a small gathering for like-minded fans during Creation Entertainment’s Annual Star Trek Convention in Las Vegas that same year and discovered that he wasn’t alone in recognizing the importance of this milestone.
In fact, the response from fans and celebrities alike was so overwhelmingly positive and supportive that he realized what had been planned as a simple one-off event was destined to become much, much more.
Deevy has spent the last eight years building the whimsically titled ‘GAAAYS IN SPAAACE’ into a full-fledged, official 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization specializing in activism and advocacy for the continued inclusion of LGBTQ+ characters inclusion in entertainment, particularly in the often-prophetic realm of science fiction.
‘GIS’ strives to relieve ignorance, promote a better understanding of LGBTQ+ individuals and empower LGBTQ+ youth by exposing them to visions of the future like the ones found in shows like STAR TREK, THE ORVILLE & THE EXPANSE, where universal equality has FINALLY become a reality; and most importantly, where they can see themselves reflected in the characters.
Since its founding in 2016, ‘GIS’ has hosted 300+ events which have spanned a dozen major US cities, featured more than 100 celebrity guests, and have been attended by well over 30,000 fans.
